UPDATE!: Early to Bed has MOVED. The store relocated to 5138 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60640, and they still have all of the quality merchandise we’ve come to love.

Even today, when acceptance of sexuality is increasing, and media culture has pulled away the curtain on all the facets surrounding various preferences, a real-life stigma exists on the act and culture surrounding sex.
For example, some people’s perception of an adult toy store might look like a dark, eerie place where employees with questionable motivations will lurk as you browse through the toys displayed in a lewd or, at best, a foreboding manner.
You pray no one will be walking outside when you leave and that the charge on your credit card will be discreet.
Thankfully, that image faded because of the work, product lines, and offerings of many new shops, boutiques, and online markets like Early to Bed (E2B), a sex shop located on Chicago’s north side.
Founded by Searah Deysach in 2001, this sex toy shop in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood is one of a kind. Sure, you’ll find dildos for sale and lacy underwear on the shelves, but the bright picture windows, classy displays, and informative posters tell you this place is different.
“I wanted a place where someone could walk in and touch and feel and fondle sex toys before they made a decision,” says Deysach. “I wanted education to be an essential component of what we do. So, we’ve had workshops since we opened.” As a self-proclaimed feminist sex toy store, E2B focuses primarily on the female experience and empowerment. Deysach says, “A lot of people, especially women, have been raised in our culture not to celebrate their bodies, not to take agency over their sexuality. When they walk into the store, they don’t know what it will be like. They have these questions and don’t know if they will be able to ask them.”
It is Deysach’s goal to change that. With classes focusing on everything from BDSM to sex for survivors of sexual assault, E2B is more than just a store. It is a comfortable place for people  – as the store caters to all genders and sexualities – to understand and discover what makes them tick. In the over eighteen years since Deysach first opened the store, she can often recount stories from many women of all ages who experience a first orgasm only after trying items from her store suited to the customer’s needs and desires without shame or judgment.
Yet, for all she does to aid the community, there are still obstacles in her path.
“When I first opened the …store in 2001, I didn’t think there’d be any barriers; I didn’t think anyone wouldn’t want a sex toy store opening in their neighborhood or their building….”
Deysach has put everything on the line to continue her dream. But there were and continue to be objections to her store. From financial institutions refusing to give her money or charging higher fees to personal threats. Why? Because she knows it matters.
“What keeps me going through the hard times, through the lean times…is that I know what I’m doing is important.”
And not just for cis-gendered women or men. In 2015, Deysach launched the website Trans Kids, which sells child-sized Female-to-Male gender expression gear such as stand-to-pee cups and flat chest binders, mainly FtM, to allow children to embrace their identifying gender better.
Parents of such kids applaud Deysach for her unabashed assistance and for creating a place online just for the non-adult trans community. Then, for the adult trans community, there’s: FtMEssentials.
It goes without saying, Deysach is keeping everyone’s needs in mind when taking on new ventures.
The work Deysach does is something for which she holds a deep passion, and it is that passion that has given her such tremendous success. Only two years after opening, E2B was named Chicago’s Best Sex shop and for six years starting in 2008, Chicago Reader also gave them the same honor. The most recent recognition was in 2021. Searah continues to rack up awards and accolades and shows no sign of slowing down.
