Consider Virtual Therapy

America, we’re going through it! We’re feeling sad, stressed, anxious, and depressed. Some of us are lonely as we struggle with isolation. And then, there is rage. Psychiatrists and therapists report a high incidence of treatment for these emotions as COVID-19, global unrest, Monkeypox, and the recession have added additional stressors to our already complicated Black and Brown lives here in the United States.
Graphic depictions of racial inequities and more fill our television screens and our social media timelines. All of these factors, as a collective, take a psychological toll. To quote the famed poet and activist James Baldwin, “To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time.”
People of color are fighting on multiple fronts, like racism and COVID. Notwithstanding, the new normal brought on by the global pandemic has been a difficult adjustment for many, according to Dr. Nefertiti Nowell, of Nowell and Associates Counseling Firm in Naperville, IL.
She says that in addition to the increased amount of patients experiencing stress, anxiety, and depression, she also sees a rise in marital discord. “…because people are afraid, there is a lot of fear…. lots of people are calling asking if the end of the world is coming. With therapy, we’re helping people see that this is not the end of their world.”
Just the facts:
For those who have never tried therapy, Nowell says that changing your thinking about when to use therapy can be the gateway to a better you.
“You don’t have to be doing awful to ask for therapy,” says Nowell. “Many people feel you have to be near suicide or hearing voices or talking to yourself to be eligible for therapy.” Nowell recommends thinking about it in terms of how you can take yourself from good to great.
“If you just have concerns about needing someone to talk to, you need to talk your goals through, or if you just need someone to talk to, then you should reach out for therapy.”
Nowell says there are three reasons you should give virtual therapy a try:
It's private:
“It puts the power back with the patient,” says Nowell, making it less intimidating because it is online. Generally, you would go into an office with people you don’t know, but with virtual therapy, you are in the comfort of your own home, car, or closet.” You’re in a place where you already feel safe. You can get expert help in your house.”

It's accessible:
“This is unprecedented,” Nowell says. Due to COVID-19, insurance companies that didn’t offer the coverage before are now offering counseling services and extending them possibly until the end of the year. Nowell’s office offers a sliding scale to help patients who may need financial assistance.
Her practice offers the Season of Change Women’s Group every Sunday at 4 p.m., “It’s a way to extend our services on a sliding scale in some instances.”

It offers more options:
Because the sessions are virtual, it widens the pool of options for choosing your provider. Nowell explains, “You can see the best therapist anywhere via Zoom, as opposed to being limited to your area.”
You might ask questions about how you should go about finding a therapist. Three factors can help you make a decision. Nowell suggests:
1. Look at counseling practices websites and search for the specialty you need.
2. Look for a picture of the therapist and a statement about their style.
3. Consider picking up the phone and calling them.

“It’s always a good time to talk to someone,” Nowell encourages. “Our clinic pushes empowerment. Now is a great time to work on improving the way you feel; therapy can help you do that.”
