“Many experimental studies have shown that components of foods or beverages may have anti-inflammatory effects,” says Dr. Frank Hu, professor of nutrition and epidemiology in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Hu affirms, “…some foods associated with an increased risk for chronic diseases, such as type-2 diabetes and heart disease, are also associated with excess inflammation,” Dr. Hu says.

Thanksgiving dining is chock full of foods that trigger inflammation to sneak into your holiday fanfare. That’s why we’ve put together this handy guide to help you find ways to infuse joy into your holiday season, despite your dietary limitations.

Inflammation Inducing Foods

* eggs
* sugar-sweetened beverages
* liver
* kidney
* brain
* heart
* non-fatty fish (like tilapia or flounder)
* tomatoes
* refined grains (bread or pasta and white rice)

Anti-Inflammatory All-Stars

* peppers
* berries
* fatty fish (like salmon or herring)
* grapes

Your Holiday Do's and Don'ts Include:

DON’T: soda and sweetened beverages
DO: make fresh cranberry relish instead of canned jellied sauce
DON’T: serve fried foods, this year you shouldn’t fry the turkey
DO: bake, braise, or broil your meats dishes
DON’T: red meat, leave the roast beef off the table
DO: serve fruit-infused water, sparkling water, and
Don’t: use processed meat (adding bacon or sausage to a stuffing)
